Kenya police engage suspected terrorists in Nairobi
January, 15, 2019 – Security forces in Kenya have responded to suspected terror attack after explosions went off at 14 Riverside Drive, a high end hotel and office complex in the capital.
Police and the attackers are engaged in a firefight that has been going on for almost an hour now.
Residents reported sustained gunfire with many huddled up in bathrooms behind locked doors. There was no immediate information on causalities. Somalia based terror group Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Trapped residents sent out appeals for help via social media while live television showed security officers escorting residents out of the premises. The explosions appear to have triggered a huge fire that engulfed several vehicles that were parked on the street.
Local media report that the blast was powerful that it was heard from as far as five kilometres away.
Nairobi last suffered a major terrorist attack in September 2013, when gunmen attacked a shopping complex, leaving dozens dead.
