The Pan-African media and journalism initiative AfroMedia has congratulated Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Idris on his appointment as the Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United Nations and Head of the African Mission in New York.

Ambassador Idris, a veteran Egyptian diplomat, brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, Ambassador to Ethiopia, and Representative to the African Union. In 2024, he was also appointed to the UN Peacebuilding Fund’s Independent High-Level Advisory Board by the UN Secretary-General.

The appointment has been welcomed as a strong affirmation of Egypt’s enduring diplomatic leadership in African and multilateral affairs. AfroMedia described it as a step that will further African representation at the global level and deepen cooperation between the African Union and the United Nations.

“This appointment reflects both the African Union’s confidence in Ambassador Idris’s distinguished diplomatic career and Egypt’s long-standing role in championing African voices on the global stage,” said Hassan Ghazaly, founder of AfroMedia.

Observers have pointed to Egypt’s historical role during the era of African liberation movements and its ongoing contributions to peacekeeping and regional diplomacy. The appointment also comes at a symbolic time, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the United Nations—of which Egypt was a founding member.

AfroMedia, established in 2021 under the Global Solidarity Network, aims to strengthen media collaboration across African countries and enhance the visibility of African narratives. Operating under the slogan “The Voice of Egypt… The Voice of Africa,” the initiative supports journalist training, cross-border partnerships, and platforms that promote a realistic, constructive portrayal of the continent.
