Mobile sports gaming firm betPawa, has embarked on a campaign entrench a safety culture commercial motorcycle riders (popularly known as Bodaboda), providing free safety training and safety gear in Kampala today.  Company officials say they expect the initiative to address the “pressing issue of road accidents, particularly involving Bodaboda riders who are among the most vulnerable groups to traffic incidents in the country.”

In addition to giving them safety gear such as helmets, campaign which will be spread across the five divisions that make up Kampala and the greater Kampala areas of Entebbe and Kira municipality; will take the riders are taken through refresher lessons about traffic rules and responsible conduct on the road.

betPawa says the ultimate aim of the activity is to make Bodaboda commuting safer for everyone. “We want to ensure the safety of both Bodaboda users and riders. Through education on road safety regulations and the provision of necessary safety gear, such as helmets, reflector jackets, and hands-free phone holders, we aim to significantly contribute to reducing road accidents involving boda bodas,”says betPawa Country Manager, Ivy Igunduura.

“betPawa’s focus on road safety aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to mitigate accidents, making it a crucial partnership in promoting safe transportation, Igunduura explained, adding that the company has set an initial target of supporting 600 Bodaboda riders during the campaign.

The campaign is also a recognition of the pivotal role commercial motorcycle taxis play in Uganda’s public transport system.
