The 2026 Stanbic Match Play Challenge has entered the quarterfinal stage following a highly competitive Round Three held over the weekend at Entebbe Golf Club.

Organised by Stanbic Bank Uganda, the annual amateur golf tournament attracted 159 golfers competing in both the main knockout contest and subsidiary categories, highlighting the event’s growing stature within Uganda’s golfing calendar.

The tournament features paired golfers competing in a knockout format for prizes that include cars, fully sponsored international trips and other high-end rewards.

Following the latest round, eight pairs secured places in the quarterfinals scheduled for June.

The opening quarterfinal fixture will see Tony Kasadha and Richard Mwami take on Herbert Kamuntu and Stephen Ojambo.

In the second matchup, Stanbic Bank IT Infrastructure Manager Brian Manyindo and Mark Musinguzi will face the experienced pairing of Godfrey Byamugisha and Bob Drani.

Henry Nsubuga and Jonathan Lukyamuzi, among last year’s strongest contenders, headline the third fixture against Sam Kacungira and Vincent Katutsi.

One of the most anticipated encounters will feature mother-and-daughter pair Edrea Kagombe and Evelyne Atukunda facing Ronald Pulle and Michael Monne after the duo impressed throughout the competition.

Speaking after the quarterfinal draw, Arthur Kiwanuka, Head of Affluent Banking at Stanbic Bank Uganda, said the tournament had reached its most decisive phase.

“The tournament has reached its most important stage, and battle lines are now being drawn. As Stanbic Bank, we remain committed to ensuring that the experience both on the course and off the course remains exceptional,” Kiwanuka said.

He added that the tournament’s rising popularity reflects the bank’s broader community engagement strategy through sport.

“This progress reflects our purpose as Stanbic Bank, because Uganda is our home, and we drive her growth,” he said.

Kiwanuka also noted that golfers would continue benefiting from offers facilitated through the bank’s FlexiPay platform during the tournament.

Away from the main knockout competition, several golfers emerged winners in subsidiary categories after strong performances at Entebbe.

Donald Nyakairu won the Men’s Group C category, while Matthew Nviri and Allan Muhereza claimed the Men’s Group B and A titles respectively.

In the ladies’ divisions, Phiona Namanya won Group B, with Ruth Akello taking the Group A honours.

Edrea Kagombe added to her impressive weekend by winning the ladies’ nearest-to-the-pin award, while Andrew Baguma claimed the men’s equivalent.

Tumubweine Twinemanzi of the Bank of Uganda won the men’s longest drive competition, with Florence Namara taking the ladies’ title.

The Stanbic Match Play Challenge has increasingly become one of Uganda’s flagship amateur golf events, attracting corporate executives, experienced golfers and emerging players.

The tournament is expected to culminate in August, when the winning pair will walk away with top prizes including luxury rewards and fully sponsored international travel packages.
