Equity Bank has enrolled 100 of Uganda’s top-performing students into its flagship leadership pipeline, signalling a continued push to build globally competitive African talent through mentorship, internships, and international university placement.
A hundred of Uganda’s highest-performing secondary school graduates have entered the 2026 cohort of the Equity Leaders Program (ELP), marking the start of an intensive leadership and career development journey designed to shape Africa’s next generation of decision-makers.
The programme, run by Equity Group Foundation, was officially launched on May 4 at Africa Bible University in Kampala, bringing together students selected from across the country’s districts based on exceptional performance in national examinations.
ELP operates across Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, targeting top academic achievers and placing them into a structured four-pillar system covering mentorship, career coaching, university counselling and access to global education opportunities.
Participants also undertake three to six months of paid internships within Equity Bank, a component designed to bridge the gap between academic excellence and workplace readiness while equipping scholars with practical leadership skills.
Speaking at the launch, Equity Bank Uganda Managing Director Gift Shoko described admission into the programme as both an honour and a responsibility, noting the rigorous selection process that filters candidates into what he termed a “distinguished pool” of future leaders.
He emphasised that the initiative is anchored on developing leadership capacity not only for Uganda but for the wider African continent and the global stage, positioning scholars as potential drivers of long-term transformation.
“It is very possible that within this group are individuals who will shape communities, industries and nations,” Shoko said, urging participants to embrace the opportunity with discipline and purpose.
Since its inception in 1998, ELP has evolved into one of Africa’s most competitive leadership pipelines, with 10,505 scholars benefiting from its mentorship and academic support structures. The programme has also built a strong track record in global university placements, with 1,115 students securing fully funded scholarships to leading institutions across North America, Europe and Asia.
These include placements at elite universities such as Harvard University, Princeton University, Columbia University and University of Pennsylvania, underscoring the programme’s growing influence in connecting African talent to global education networks.

Equity Group Foundation continues to position the initiative as a long-term investment in human capital, with a focus on fostering socio-economic transformation through education and leadership development.
Shoko encouraged the new cohort to view uncertainty as part of the growth process, urging them to use the programme as a platform for self-discovery and clarity of purpose rather than immediate certainty.
He also challenged the scholars to align their ambitions with national development priorities, stressing that academic success alone is insufficient without a commitment to innovation, service and impact.
The latest intake joins an expanding network of Equity scholars across Africa and in leading global institutions, reinforcing the programme’s role in building a cross-border community of young leaders.
As Uganda sharpens its focus on youth empowerment and skills development, initiatives such as the ELP complement broader efforts to enhance the country’s competitiveness in an increasingly globalised economy.
With their academic credentials already established, the 2026 cohort now faces the broader test of translating excellence in the classroom into leadership, innovation and tangible national impact.
