Equity Bank Uganda’s sponsorship of the 2026 Kabaka Birthday Run underscores the growing role of corporate backing in scaling Uganda’s HIV/AIDS fight.

Corporate sponsorship is increasingly emerging as the backbone of Uganda’s largest public health campaigns, with Equity Bank Uganda deepening its role in the 2026 Kabaka Birthday Run through direct financial and participatory support.

The bank has boosted this year’s edition by purchasing and donating 140 kits, reinforcing a model where private sector players are not only funding initiatives but actively embedding themselves in their execution.

The 13th edition of the run, slated for April 12, will mark the 71st birthday of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, and continues to serve as a flagship mobilisation platform for the Buganda Kingdom in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Equity Bank Uganda’s Executive Director, Claver Sserumaga, said the institution’s involvement reflects a shared mission with the Kingdom to transform lives and expand opportunity.

“As Equity Bank Uganda, we are honoured to join the 13th edition of the Kabaka’s Birthday Run as we celebrate His Majesty’s 71st birthday,” Sserumaga said.

In a demonstration of hands-on corporate leadership, Sserumaga will personally run the 21-kilometre race, signalling a shift from passive sponsorship to visible participation.

“Like the Buganda Kingdom, we exist to transform lives and livelihoods and create opportunities for wealth and prosperity. We are excited to be part of this journey,” he added.

This year’s theme—“Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child”—places a spotlight on male responsibility in reducing new HIV infections and protecting vulnerable populations. For corporate actors, it provides a platform to align brand purpose with national health priorities, particularly the global target of ending HIV/AIDS by 2030.

The Kabaka Birthday Run has grown exponentially since its inception, expanding from about 1,000 participants to more than 130,000 runners in 2026. Its sustained growth has been underpinned by partnerships with corporate sponsors whose contributions drive logistics, visibility and nationwide reach.

According to UNAIDS, Uganda has registered notable progress in the fight against HIV, with prevalence among adults aged 15–49 dropping from 7.3pc in 2010 to 4.9pc in 2024. New infections have declined by 61pc, while over 1.3 million people are accessing antiretroviral treatment.

The run has played a catalytic role in these gains, promoting testing, safe male circumcision, condom use and adherence to treatment, while leveraging cultural influence to normalise public health messaging.

Sserumaga noted that the theme underscores a shared responsibility across institutions and individuals.

“This year’s theme reminds us of our shared responsibility in the fight to end HIV/AIDS by 2030. Equity Bank proudly stands with Buganda Kingdom in this noble cause,” he said.
