MTN mobile money now crosses borders
Kampala November 29-Subscribers to MTN Uganda’s mobile money will now be able to send money to Safaricom’s MPesa customers as well as MTN Rwanda mobile money customers in Kenya and Rwanda respectively, as the three telecom operators’ add more functionality to their ‘One Network’ platform.
MTN’s cross-border mobile money function comes with an automatic currency converter which will enable local currency transactions at both the sending and receiving end.
“Technology is helping us eliminate national borders, enabling a unified digital and mobile financial services world. We are delighted to offer a solution that further enhances that agenda and trust that our customers will find it a secure and easy way of transferring funds internationally,” said Mr. Phrase Lubega, MTN Uganda’s General Manager in charge of Mobile Financial Services said.
Customers intending to send money to either Kenya or Rwanda will access the service by dialing the normal *165*1*, selecting Option 5 to send to Safaricom MPesa customers or Option 6 to send to MTN Mobile Money customers in Rwanda at a fee of Ush 5,000/-plus a 5% of the amount being sent.
