Equity Bank Uganda has once again been designated as a Domestic Systemically Important Bank (DSIB) by the Bank of Uganda, marking its third consecutive year receiving the distinction. The DSIB classification underscores the bank’s crucial role in Uganda’s financial ecosystem and highlights its continued operational resilience and financial health.

Awarded to institutions whose failure could pose a risk to the stability of the financial system, the DSIB status is reserved for banks that meet strict regulatory benchmarks. Equity Bank’s recognition signals strong capitalization, regulatory compliance, and strategic discipline.

Gift Shoko, Managing Director of Equity Bank Uganda, welcomed the reaffirmation: “Being recognized as a Domestic Systemically Important Bank for the third year running is a testament to our commitment to financial stability and customer trust. We remain dedicated to upholding the highest standards of banking excellence and contributing to the growth and development of Uganda’s economy.”

Equity’s DSIB status comes on the back of strategic investments in digital transformation, customer-centric service models, and key partnerships that have expanded its reach and bolstered its service delivery. Its collaborations with fintech firms and commitment to financial inclusion continue to differentiate it in an increasingly competitive market.

With DSIB designation comes greater regulatory scrutiny and the requirement to maintain elevated capital reserves—measures designed to ensure resilience in the face of economic shocks. This aligns Equity with international best practices in banking oversight and underscores its role as a cornerstone of Uganda’s financial sector.

Looking ahead, Equity Bank Uganda says it remains focused on innovation, inclusive banking, and supporting Uganda’s economic transformation. The sustained DSIB recognition affirms its strength and positions it to meet the evolving needs of customers and regulators alike.
