A year after its entry into Uganda, French retailer Carrefour is spreading its footprint with a second store set to open in April. Carrefour debuted in Uganda when it opened its first store at Oasis Mall in December 2019.

The French retail giant will be the anchor tenant at the refurbished Metroplex mall in Naalya, where it has taken over the 3000 square metres formerly occupied by fallen Kenyan retailer Nakumatt. The property was acquired by Mauritian real estate developer, Gateway Delta Development Holdings, that has been implementing an USD20 million redevelopment program since August 2019.

Apart from Carrefour, other retailers that had reserved space at Metroplex include Woolworths and Bats as well as Cafe Javas which is also expected to operate at outlet there. The mall’s location, gives tenants access to the high-density residential market along the greater Naalya- Kiwatule-Najjera axis.

Uganda is Carrefour’s sixteenth market globally. The retailer has engaged 260 local suppliers and employs 180 local staff at its maiden outlet at Oasis Mall.

Gateway has reconfigured the interior of the mall, with a new central atrium space, food hub and coffee shops. Elevators and escalators have been installed, easing mobility for visitors. Knight Frank who brokered the purchase of the property from former owners has been retained to manage the mall.
