Flag carrier TAAG Angola Airlines took delivery of the first of four Boeing 787 Dreamliners on order, on January 30. The aircraft featuring the airline’s new livery arrived at the new Luanda International Airport to a traditional salute, marking the start of a new phase in TAAG’s fleet growth and network development.

Acquired on lease from AerCap under an order placed in 2023, the 787-9 is configured to 313 seats distributed across three cabins – 16 business class, 21 premium economy and 276 in economy class.

TAAG says the fuel-efficient widebody jets which joins five 777-300ER, three 777-200ERs, and seven 737NGs, will support expansion of its long-haul network, with plans to launch new routes across multiple geographies.

“The delivery of the 787-9 is a pivotal step in our strategy to modernize TAAG Angola Airlines’ fleet. This airplane also brings the efficiency and versatility we need to meet growing market demands, replace our aging widebody fleet, and deliver a world-class experience to our passengers,” TAAG’s CEO Nelson Rodrigues de Oliveira, said in remarks shortly after the aircraft’s arrival in Luanda.

The delivery came just ahead of celebrations to mark Angola’s 50th Liberation Day anniversary that falls on February 4, ands close to 50 years since the delivery of TAAG Angola’s first airplane, a Boeing 737-200.

“The 787 Dreamliner will complement TAAG Angola Airlines’ fleet of Boeing 737 and 777 jets, as we continue to support the airline in its mission to connect people and places across the globe,” said Anbessie Yitbarek, vice president of Boeing Commercial Sales for Africa.

“Our 50-year relationship with TAAG Angola Airlines has been built on trust and shared goals, and we look forward to many more years of successful collaboration and innovation together.”

Meanwhile, TAAG has also signed an agreement with Boeing to purchase carbon credits through an accounting process called book-and-claim. Distributors will through these purchased certificates deliver blended SAF at various airports for use by airlines and other carriers.
