Equity Bank Uganda hosts downtown blood drive to mark World Blood Donor Week
Equity Bank Uganda held a major blood donation drive June 19, at Mini Price, one of Kampala’s busiest intersections, in support of national health services during World Blood Donor Week. The event drew scores of volunteers, transforming an ordinary weekday into a moment of quiet heroism.
With music energizing the downtown crowd and banners encouraging participation, medical professionals stood ready as passersby paused to donate blood — many for the first time. By midday, dozens had already stepped forward, responding to what the bank called “a very real crisis.”
Barbra Among, Equity Bank’s Communications Manager, said the event was about bringing the opportunity to save lives closer to the people.
“Uganda is facing critical blood shortages in hospitals across the country,” she said. “By coming to Mini Price, right in the heart of the city, we’re making it easier for the public to participate in something that truly saves lives.”
Among emphasized that blood donation is not just a health issue, but a moral one.
“You don’t have to be a doctor to save lives. Just showing up and donating a pint of blood can make all the difference,” she said. “We’re proud to stand with the Ministry of Health and the Uganda Blood Transfusion Service to support this life-saving work.”
According to the Uganda Blood Transfusion Service, the country requires a minimum of 450,000 units of blood each year but often falls short — particularly during school holidays, when regular student donations decline. The shortfall puts lives at risk, especially those of mothers in labour, accident victims, and children with cancer.
Equity Bank’s campaign — which it has branded under the hashtag #BeyondBankingWeCare — aims to raise awareness and spark civic action. A single pint of blood, medical experts say, can save up to three lives.
In a message shared during the event, the bank reminded the public:
“You don’t need a cape to be a hero — just a willing heart. Give blood. Give hope. Give life.”
The drive is part of Equity Bank’s wider commitment to community development through health, education, and financial inclusion initiatives.
As World Blood Donor Week continues, Equity Bank is celebrating the selfless acts of everyday people who choose to give, without ever knowing who they’ll save.
