United Airlines has marked five years of nonstop flights between Johannesburg and Newark, New York, carrying more than 650,000 passengers and 8,400 tonnes of cargo on the route since its launch in 2021.

The US carrier said it has operated more than 3,300 flights between O.R. Tambo International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport since starting the year-round daily service, becoming the first US airline to establish a nonstop link between Johannesburg and the US East Coast.

The route gives South African travellers direct access to New York while also connecting Johannesburg into United’s wider network through Newark, including destinations such as Chicago, Denver and Houston.

The Johannesburg service forms part of United’s broader South African network that includes nonstop flights between Cape Town and Newark and between Cape Town and Washington, D.C.

“As well as providing travellers from Gauteng with a convenient nonstop service to New York, our Johannesburg service offers the possibility to connect via our Newark hub to over 130 additional destinations across the Western Hemisphere,” said Amit Badiani, Head of Africa and Offline Sales at United Airlines.

The carrier also relies on its codeshare and loyalty relationship with South African regional airline Airlink to extend connectivity from Johannesburg into other Southern African markets.

Stephen Maphalla, Acting Regional General Manager at Airports Company South Africa, said the Newark-Johannesburg route had become an important component of O.R. Tambo’s international connectivity.

“Five years on, the route continues to support passenger growth, tourism, trade and cargo flows,” Maphalla said.

The five-year milestone comes as US-Africa air connectivity remains concentrated around a relatively small number of long-haul routes.

United has expanded its African footprint beyond South Africa to include Accra, Lagos and Marrakesh, while South Africa remains its largest African market by route offering.

The Johannesburg-Newark service currently operates daily using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The aircraft has 257 seats, comprising 48 United Polaris business-class seats, 21 Premium Plus seats and 188 economy seats, including 39 Economy Plus seats.

United said the service is scheduled to depart Johannesburg at 10pm and arrive in Newark at 7:45am the following day. The return flight leaves Newark at 9:25pm and arrives in Johannesburg at 6:30pm the following day.

Beyond the route itself, United is continuing to invest in its long-haul passenger proposition, including the rollout of Starlink connectivity, seatback entertainment systems and digital tools for connecting passengers and baggage tracking.

The airline expects Starlink installations across its fleet to be completed before the end of 2027, while it is also installing seatback screens on as many as 1,000 aircraft.

From Newark, United plans to serve more than 160 destinations in over 45 countries during the 2027 summer season, making the New York-area airport a significant connecting point for its Africa network.
