Uganda will get its first Aflatoxin remover plant in the coming months, when Soroti based PELA Commodities completes installation of TOXIscrub, a machine that reduces contaminants in cereals to harmless compounds. The move will potentially raise the value of the company’s cereals in the local and regional markets.

The grain cleaning line whose installation will start in the coming months is supplied by British agro-processing equipment maker Perry Engineering.

According to Perry Engineering, the system works by breaking up the chemical bond in the Aflatoxin, reducing it to a simple non-toxic double Aldehyde which then disperses. The system will be able to remove a range of contaminants in cereals including Mycotoxins, Aflatoxin, Ocratoxin, Vomitoxin, Citrinin, Ergot Alkaloids, Patulin, Fumonisins, and Zeralenone. It will treat maize, beans, rice, peanuts, soybean, wheat, barley, and oats.

“Agro-processing is one of the fastest-growing sub-sectors and with the services and equipment that Perry Engineering provides, we believe that we will be able to contribute to Uganda’s agriculture industry. With the combination of the right technology, our customers will add the much-needed value to boost agro-production. We already are seeing good results with our customers in Uganda and the other Africa markets,” says David Perry, Managing Director Perry Engineering Services.
