TAAG continues African expansion with Abidjan route launch
The expansion is anchored on the Airbus A220, positioned as the right fit for medium-density African routes
TAAG Angola Airlines has launched flights to Abidjan, strengthening West African connectivity and reinforcing Luanda’s emergence as a regional hub.
TAAG Angola Airlines has launched its first commercial passenger service to Abidjan, marking a renewed push into West Africa as the carrier accelerates its regional expansion strategy.
The inaugural flight, operated on April 6, establishes a three-times-weekly connection between Luanda and Abidjan, with departures scheduled for Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The service is primarily operated using the Airbus A220-300, configured to carry 137 passengers and increasingly seen as well-suited for intra-African routes with moderate demand.
TAAG says the new route reflects its ambition to deepen its presence across key African markets, while consolidating its Luanda hub at Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport as a strategic gateway linking Africa to long-haul destinations.
The flag carrier is structuring the Abidjan service around a multipoint connectivity model, enabling passengers from Côte d’Ivoire to connect seamlessly to destinations across Africa, South America and Europe via Luanda. The approach aligns with a broader industry shift toward hub-and-spoke optimisation, as African airlines seek to capture transfer traffic within a fragmented continental market.
Beyond passenger traffic, the airline is also targeting cargo opportunities on the route, positioning the new service as a facilitator of trade between Angola and Côte d’Ivoire. Increased belly-hold capacity is expected to support cargo flows, strengthening commercial ties and unlocking economic synergies between the two countries.
A ceremonial reception was held at Félix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport to mark the inaugural arrival, attended by aviation authorities and government representatives from both countries.
The Abidjan launch builds on TAAG’s recent network expansion, following the introduction of passenger and cargo services to Nairobi last year, as the airline steadily broadens its African footprint.
