Equity Bank Uganda honours 80 customers for loyalty, business growth and community impact, highlighting financing and community development.

Equity Bank Uganda has recognised 80 customers for loyalty, business growth and community impact as the lender marked Customer Service Week 2026 under the theme “Going the Extra Mile”.

The customers were honoured at a breakfast at Protea Kampala on Thursday, with similar events held across the bank’s northern, eastern and western regions. The recognition covered long-serving customers, repeat borrowers, top depositors and individuals whose work has contributed to community development.

Among those recognised were Alfred Anyoti, managing director of Ana Investments Uganda Limited, and Solomon Serwanjja, chairman of Bamutakudde Village and chief executive of the African Institute for Investigative Journalism.

Anyoti opened a personal account with Equity in 2011 before expanding his relationship with the bank as his agricultural engineering business grew. He said financial guidance from his relationship manager, Hillary Andrews, helped him strengthen his financial position and access financing.

After investing about Shs500 million in property development to improve his collateral position, Anyoti secured financing that enabled him to execute a government contract worth about Shs1 billion.

“Business opportunities often come with strict timelines, and having access to financing at the right time can make a significant difference,” he said.

Serwanjja’s relationship with the bank began when he was a university student. His organisation now maintains about five accounts with Equity, while he is pursuing a five-year community development plan focused on clean water, accountability and household incomes.

The initiative includes plans to sink three boreholes and establish a poultry enterprise through which households can collaborate in egg production, branding and marketing. The target is to help participating households work towards daily earnings of at least Shs20,000.

Equity Executive Director Claver Serumaga in the Middle(Red Tie-Blue Suit) with outstanding customers at the Banks Customer Appreacution Breakfast at Protea Hotel

Equity Bank Uganda Head of Customer Experience Jael Christine Wawulira said the annual celebration provided an opportunity to appreciate customers and assess how the bank responds to their needs.

Executive Director Claver Serumaga acknowledged that system failures had frustrated some customers, but said the bank was investing in technology and service delivery.

The investments include a new data centre opened earlier this year, upgraded internet and mobile banking platforms, improved technology for Equity agents and a dedicated technology team. The bank is also reviewing branch coverage and strengthening its contact centre.

Serumaga said about 90pc of the bank’s staff had received artificial intelligence certification to equip them with skills to help customers explore technology-driven business opportunities.

The recognition comes as banks face pressure to demonstrate that customer relationships translate into reliable service, accessible financing and tangible economic value.

For Equity, the experiences of Anyoti and Serwanjja illustrate two dimensions of that relationship: financing that enables businesses to pursue larger contracts and banking relationships that extend into community development.
