Buying 3rd-party insurance is a USSD away, after underwriter Britam teamed up with MTN Uganda to distribute the product via the latter’s mobile money platform. This and other products will be accessible across MTN’s network of mobile money agents as well as directly off the MTN Mobile Money payments platform.

Initially only offering Motor Third Party Insurance, the product line will over time expand to include other personal product lines such as travel insurance and domestic Packages in the future.

“We are committed to multi-channel distribution to increase accessibility and choice. We are working with long-term partners such as MTN Mobile Money Uganda who share our digital first vision and approach to customer service and are looking forward to our customers benefiting from this”, Britam Uganda CEO Allan Mafabi told guests at the launch that was held at the Sheraton Kampala on September 20.

MTN mobile money agents will use the Agent App Motor Third Party System to serve customers while customers can also make payments directly off their mobile money accounts. Under the new system which has been under pilot for nearly a year, after paying the statutory fees, a customer can walk to any Britam Insurance agent or selected MTN outlets to have the sticker printed out at no additional cost. The launch was witnessed by senior officials from the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), Uganda Police – Traffic Division, MTN Uganda Executive Management Committee, Britam agents and distributors.

MTN Mobile Money GM Stephen Mutana said the partnership with Britam offered “a glimpse into what the future should look like. We are thankful that Britam Insurance has seen the possibilities of what MTN MoMo can do to simplify and streamline the business operations process while easing the lives of customers.
