On-demand delivery platform Glovo has opened a new Kampala office as it marks five years of operations in Uganda, underscoring its expansion drive and growing role in the country’s green economy.

Since entering the market in 2020, Glovo has invested UGX 33 billion, creating 6,000 jobs across direct staff, partner stores, restaurants, and riders. The platform has partnered with over 3,000 local merchants—95pc of them small and medium-sized enterprises—generating UGX 143 billion in direct economic value for these businesses.

Glovo Country Manager for Uganda Ms Ivy Maingi

Glovo says Uganda is now its greenest market globally. In 2024, 37pc of orders were delivered using electric or non-combustion vehicles, the highest share in its network. Currently, 39pc of riders use electric motorbikes, with plans to raise this to 70pc through subsidies offered with Ugandan e-mobility firm Zembo. The shift, Glovo says, cuts CO₂ emissions by 21pc and slashes fuel costs for riders by 58pc, saving them about UGX 84,500 a month.

“Uganda has been a remarkable growth story for Glovo,” said Ivy Maingi, Country Manager. “We are proud to be enabling digital commerce, creating thousands of income opportunities, and building the greenest delivery operation in our network.”

Dr. Cosmas Mwikirize, Superintendent of Industrial Value Chains Development at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, noted Glovo’s contribution to innovation and greener transport, saying it demonstrated “how the platform economy can drive sustainable economic growth.”

Operating in Kampala, Mukono, and Entebbe, Glovo plans to double its Uganda business within two years, citing opportunities in digital payments and cashless commerce. Across Africa, the company says it generated more than €1 billion in direct economic value between 2020 and 2024 for 45,000 businesses—90pc of them SMEs.

The new Kampala office at AHA Towers, Lourdel Road, will serve as a hub for partner support, rider engagement, and recruitment.
