Canadian, Australian telco’s set to launch in Uganda
KAMPALA,FEBRUARY21 – Canada based Lyca Telecom and Australia’s Tangerine are in a race to launch operations in Uganda adding yet more pressure to a market where incumbents are seeing mixed fortunes. 256BN has learned that Lyca Telecom’s plans are the more advanced with a launch likely during the course of the next few weeks.
With the GSM spectrum exhausted, both operators who are known to play more in the data segment, will be piggybacking on existing public infrastructure providers to offer broadband services.
The duo will be the latest entrant after the 2015 entry of Vodafone, which has since enjoyed exponential growth and has since began offering a voice product.
Tangerine’s entry schedule is still hazy but industry sources confirm that both operators have secured licences.
