SWISS ushers in new era of long-haul efficiency with first A350-900 delivery
Fuel-efficient A350 ushers in new standards for comfort, sustainability, and long-haul performance.
Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has taken delivery of its first Airbus A350-900, becoming the latest Lufthansa Group carrier to introduce the next-generation widebody into service. The aircraft, featuring the new SWISS Senses cabin, is central to the airline’s fleet renewal plan and will significantly reduce fuel burn and emissions.
Lufthansa Group member Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) on October 10 took delivery of the first of ten Airbus A350-900s on order, marking a major milestone in the airline’s fleet modernisation and sustainability drive. The aircraft will serve as the new flagship for SWISS’s long-haul operations.
The next-generation widebody will be based in Zurich and deployed on intercontinental routes, starting with Boston, as the carrier strengthens its global network and replaces older, less efficient models.
The A350-900 is also the first aircraft in the SWISS long-haul fleet to feature the new SWISS Senses cabin — a four-class layout designed to enhance comfort and personalisation across all seating classes. The configuration includes three First Class suites, 45 Business Class seats, 38 in Premium Economy, and 156 in Economy.
Described by Airbus as “the world’s most modern widebody aircraft,” the A350 delivers up to 25pc lower fuel burn, operating costs, and CO₂ emissions than previous-generation jets, thanks to advanced aerodynamics, new Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, and lightweight composite materials.
The cabin, part of Airbus’s Airspace design philosophy, features wider seats, higher ceilings, and ambient lighting intended to reduce fatigue and enhance passenger well-being on long-haul flights.
As part of Airbus’s long-term decarbonisation roadmap, the A350 is certified to operate with up to 50pc Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) today, with full compatibility for 100pc SAF targeted by 2030.
At the end of September 2025, Airbus had secured over 1,400 orders for the A350 family from 63 customers worldwide, reinforcing its position as a global leader in long-range, fuel-efficient aircraft.
