Old Mutual partners with Rotary Uganda on low-cost digital funeral cover
In a move that underscores the growing convergence of technology and community-centered insurance products, Old Mutual Life Assurance Uganda has partnered with Rotary Uganda to roll out a fully digital Group Funeral Cover tailored for Rotarians in Districts 9213 and 9214.
The new product, which offers annual premiums starting from as low as UGX 95,000, is designed to provide financial support to members and their families in the event of bereavement. It marks a significant stride in simplifying access to insurance in a country where uptake has traditionally been hindered by cost and complexity.
The cover is accessible via multiple digital channels, including USSD code *228#, WhatsApp (0709 460 552), and a secure online platform. According to Old Mutual, the product can be purchased, serviced, and claimed without paperwork, queues, or in-person visits — a major boost for convenience and accessibility.
“This partnership goes beyond providing financial protection,” said Patrick Kimathi, Managing Director of Old Mutual Life Assurance. “It signals our commitment to building strong, resilient communities and to supporting Rotary’s values of service and impact. Through this product and future initiatives, we are proud to walk alongside Rotary Uganda to deliver dignity and peace of mind to its members.”
The collaboration also includes Old Mutual’s support for several Rotary initiatives, such as the Rotary Cancer Run, financial literacy campaigns, and environmental conservation projects. This broad engagement reflects Old Mutual’s sustainability focus, which Kimathi described as being “about more than business — it’s about being a force for good.”
Rotary District 9213 Governor Anne Nkutu welcomed the partnership, calling it a “timely and meaningful solution” for the Rotary family. “Rotary stands for service above self,” she said. “This funeral cover product not only offers a dignified response to loss but also reinforces the values of care, solidarity, and community upliftment that we hold dear.”
With this partnership, Old Mutual leverages its digital innovation credentials and long-standing insurance expertise, while Rotary brings its deeply rooted grassroots network. Together, they aim to redefine how social protection is delivered across professional and service networks in Uganda.
The rollout comes at a time when Uganda’s insurance sector is pushing aggressively toward deeper penetration, especially through micro and group insurance models, and could serve as a case study for effective digital insurance delivery tied to trusted civic institutions.
