Nile Breweries Limited (NBL) Jinja Plant has been named the overall winner at the 2025 Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Awards, earning the brewer national recognition for its outstanding commitment to workplace safety and health.

Hosted by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development at the Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI), the awards formed part of the national observance of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on April 28. This year’s theme, “Revolutionizing Health & Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalization at Work,” highlighted the transformative role of technology in enhancing occupational safety standards.

In a double win for the brewer, NBL also received the award for Outstanding Performance in OHS Management in the Industry Sector, outshining 27 other companies from across the country.

“This award is a reflection of our steadfast commitment to safety,” said Emmanuel Njuki, NBL’s Head of Legal and Corporate Affairs. “We are proud to have achieved over 1,762 days without a Total Recordable Injury and 1,118 consecutive injury-free days. Our success is driven by robust safety protocols, a proactive safety culture, and the integration of advanced digital tools to monitor and enhance workplace safety.”

The Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Hon. Betty Amongi, who presided over the ceremony, emphasized the importance of compliance and leadership in safety management. “Contractors must be fully integrated into safety systems, and the use of personal protective equipment must be non-negotiable,” she said. Amongi also noted that the recently enacted OSH Amendment Act and the launch of the OSHMIS platform will strengthen workplace inspections and enforcement mechanisms.

Now in their third year, the OHS Awards celebrate organizations that excel in creating safer work environments and safeguarding employee well-being—principles that NBL says remain central to its operations.
