Ministry of Works to evict car bonds encroaching on Nakawa-Kireka road reserve
The Ministry of Works and Transport has issued a 30-day notice to car dealers and bond operators occupying the road reserve along the Nakawa-Banda-Kireka stretch of the Kampala–Jinja Highway, warning of imminent eviction if they do not vacate voluntarily.
According to a public notice issued by the Ministry, the presence of car bonds within the road reserve violates Section 16(1) of the Roads Act, 2019. The illegal occupation has reportedly worsened traffic congestion, obstructed drainage systems, and created serious safety risks for road users on the busy corridor that links Kampala to the eastern region.
The Ministry has invoked Section 24(1) of the Roads Act, granting affected businesses until July 27, 2025, to clear the area. After this grace period, the Ministry will commence an enforcement operation to remove unauthorized structures and installations at the cost of the owners.
“This exercise is critical in restoring the functionality, safety, and integrity of this section of the national road network,” said Bageya Waiswa, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry.
The crackdown forms part of a broader effort by the government to enforce compliance with road infrastructure regulations and ensure that transport corridors remain free from obstructions. Car dealers operating within the affected zone are now expected to relocate their vehicles and structures or risk forced removal.
